Delhi Metro-Part I

The Delhi Metro

The Delhi Metro was the second Metro Railway in India. We have seen the story of Kolkata, but the story of Dehi's metro is very different from that of Kolkata. Let's see the story of Delhi metro in this post.

The possibilities of having a metro in and around Delhi was first explored in 1969. In 1984, the Urban Arts Commission conducted a survey and found out that the condition of the city's suburban railway had to be improved and a new metro railway had to be built. This laid the foundation of the very first modern metro in India.

In the 1990's, the city's road and rail infrastructure were crippling. To alleviate pressure and improve the condition of traffc in the city, a metro railway was proposed and was started to be constructed in 1998. While planning the metro, the sufferings of Kolkata were closely monitored so that the msitakes won't be repeated in case of Delhi. Therefore, a new organisation called DMRC or Delhi Metro Rail Corporation was formed to implement the metro. Kolkata metro couldn't take any independent decision as it was directly under the West Bengal govt. and later under the Indian Railway.

To prevent such mistakes happening again, DMRC was given full control over the metro and had to depend on the govt. only in case of funds. Dr. E.Sreedharan was the leader of the project and implemented the construction of the metro.

With no shortage of funds, the metro was executed rapidly. This time, instead of ICF, Hyundai Rotem got the contract to manufacture rakes for Delhi Metro. But the Ministry of Railways managed to force DMRC to use broad gauge trains.

The key fator of Delhi to have this much metro in NCR is that DMRC never stopped construction. The figure below shows how the metro expanded.

The history of the metro is quite long. Stay tuned for part 2....
